DAWSON, TX -- A Texas high school student was paddled for not standing up for the pledge of allegiance.
Sixteen-year-old Carrie Douglas says, last week a substitute teacher took offense to the fact that she didn't stand during the pledge.
She says she had to go to the principal's office, where she said, she was told she was in trouble for being disrespectful, and consequently was given the choice of detention or paddling.
She chose to be paddled.
"We are supposed to be one nation under god, and that is not what we are right now, so I don't feel like that is what I want to represent," said Carrie.
The school superintendent stated "We have never punished a student for not standing during the pledge. We do punish students who are disruptive in class."
