HOUSTON (KTRK) --A man accused of sexually assaulting an underage girl was surprised to learn he's been charged and says he's been cooperating with investigators.
Jose David Coronado, who goes by David, is charged with sexual assault of a child under 17 -- a felony.
According to court records, in June, Coronado met the 15-year-old victim through a friend on Meetme.com, an adult meet-up site. The two then communicated using Snapchat, a social media application that doesn't store messages.
The teen told investigators she sent nude photos of herself and then sneaked out of her house to meet Coronado. They parked and had sex in the back seat of his car. He then drove her home.
Almost two months later, she made an outcry. She says she told Coronado she was 14. He is 23.
Eyewitness News went looking for Coronado.
Reporter: "Do you know about this?"
Coronado: "I was aware I was being investigated."
He didn't know the charge was filed Tuesday. There is also a warrant out for his arrest.
Reporter: "She couldn't consent. She's underage."
Coronado has been interviewed by an investigator with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Court records say when he told Coronado the girl was underage, he placed his hands on his face and said, "Oh (expletive)."
Reporter: "Did you know she was 14?"
Coronado: "No, I did not."
Reporter: "Did you think she was older?"
Coronado: "I wasn't aware of how old she was."
Coronado has some prior criminal charges that include marijuana possession and evading arrest. He tells Eyewitness News he has hired an attorney and plans to turn himself in.
"I'm doing my part. I am not running from anybody," he said. "It is serious. I don't know what's going on."
Bond has been set at $20,000.
