CALIFORNIA -- A Mt. San Antonio College football player was arrested after knocking out a referee during a game.

A fight began to break out between players on Saturday, with Mt. SAC playing at Ventura County Community College.

The referee tried to get the fight under control when SAC lineman Bernard Schirmer, who is 6 feet 5 inches and 270 pounds, knocked the referee unconscious.

Schirmer's father said his son was hitting himself in the head to calm down and accidentally hit the referee.

The referee was treated at the field and released, and Schirmer was charged with felony battery.
