HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. They're the holy grail of social media, but chances are, it's not the social media apps your teenagers are using, and experts say it's not what predators are using either.

Crime Stoppers of Houston is sending out a warning to parents about a number of other social media apps that parents should know about.

"They are on social media apps, do you know what they are? They use hidden apps. Do you even know what those are." said Rania Mankarious. "They are going to be engaging with strangers and people that you're not aware of. So we always say, parents please take the time to understand what social media platforms your kids are on. It's not enough anymore to be on Facebook. Your kids are on 10 other apps that you're not aware of."

Mankarious said parents need to have an open discussion with their kids once a phone if given to them. She said if a child is not mature enough to have a talk about pedophiles, then chances are that child should not allowed to have a phone with access to the internet.
