HOUSTON (KTRK) -- From prayers, to memories shared, dozens gathered to remember Deputy Darren Goforth on Saturday morning.

Different speakers shared stories and memories.

COMMUNITY MARCH TO HONOR LIFE AND SACRIFICE OF DEPUTY DARREN GOFORTH

"The silly grin he had and a sense of humor," said Rex Exans, the Chief of Cleveland ISD.

The one thing all the speakers remembered most was Goforth's smile.

"They knew him, it was obvious he was just like that, always smiling," said Allen Goforth, Darren Goforth's father.

And with that smile, came a friend that was always watching out for his fellow officer.

"He was just one of those guys, he always had your back. If you were ever on a call all you had to do was look around and Darren would be there," said Evans.

The memorial services come one year after Goforth was shot to death while filling up his patrol car at a gas station.

The district attorney says evidence suggests Goforth was targeted because he was in law enforcement.
