FORT BEND COUNTY, TX (KTRK) --Anne Sullivan Elementary will open its doors on Monday.
"She's in my heart every moment of every day, but now she's got a bigger place to be, which is in this school," Mary Sullivan explained.
Her daughter, Anne, died in 2013. She and three other firefighters were trapped inside the Southwest Inn when the roof collapsed. Anne had only been on the job for six weeks.
She was 24 years old.
"It's so hard not to have Anne here in my life any longer, but I know she was doing exactly what she wanted to do," Mary explained. "She was just where she wanted to be. Honestly, if she was told she couldn't go in that building, to go out on the curb, I know she would've been disappointed."
Anne was born in Sugar Land and grew up attending Fort Bend ISD schools. So, last year, her mother wrote a letter to the superintendent, asking him to consider naming a new school after her. District officials immediately agreed.
"This is how Anne will live on," Mary said. "I can't think of a better way to do so."
