Save on laptops just in time for back-to-school.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A must for any college kid on the go is a laptop.

People like gamers and video producers might need high-powered laptops that cost upwards of $1,000, but most students don't.

Consumer Reports just rated the best ones for the money.

First up are Mac laptops. They tend to be expensive as you'll pay $1000 or more for anything they have to offer.

But, in the Consumer Reports survey, they are ranked as the most reliable. If you do decide to splurge, a highly recommended one is the 13-inch Macbook Pro for $1300. It's fast, durable and highly reviewed.

For the budget shoppers, check out the Lenovo Flex 4 for $700.

It has a lot of bells and whistles with an 11 hour battery life.

Now, if your student needs to surf the net and write papers, the Dell Chromebook 11 may be the one.

It's quick but if you have a lot of tabs opens, it may slow down. We found a used one for less that $160.

And finally, for $300 you can snag a "new" Asus Transformer Book. It's a valued brand that rated well and has a long battery life.
