Parents claim boy found wandering in Stafford

STAFFORD, TX (KTRK) -- The parents of a toddler found wandering alone and barefoot in Stafford have claimed their little boy -- but getting him back may not be that simple.

On Monday afternoon, an emergency hearing took place in front of a Fort Bend County judge.

The emergency hearing lasted a little more than an hour. The judge decided to leave the three-year-old in foster care, at least for now.

We've learned that he was staying at the Extended Stay near where he was found early Sunday morning.

According to Child Protective Services, his mom told investigators she went to work that morning and left the boy with her roommate.

He reportedly fell asleep and says he thought the boy was with her, so didn't think anything of it when he wasn't there.

The boy was found around 8:30 Sunday morning wandering near the feeder road close to Gringos. He was barefoot and only wore a onesie.

His father was at the hearing. We asked if he had anything to say about what happened to his son, and he had no comment. The boy's mother came forward when they both realized he was missing. At this point, no charges have been filed.

The boy was not able to tell officers his name or his parents' name, possibly because of hearing issues he's had since he was a baby.

There's another hearing scheduled for next Tuesday.

The child's mother released the following statement to abc13:

"Mom is relieved that her son was not seriously injured as a result of this unfortunate incident. She was at work the entire day and made child care arrangements for her son for the day. She was unaware that her son had gotten out of the apartment and away from the caregiver. It was not until Mom returned home from work late Sunday evening that she was told what happened and she contacted the authorities. Mom is grateful to the members of the public, the Police Department and CPS who took great care of her son. She is eager to bring her son home and put this incident behind her."
