HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A police officer and a suspect exchanged multiple rounds of gunfire Thursday afternoon in north Houston.

According to Houston police, the armed suspect fired shots at the officer in the 6200 block of Werner Street. HPD says the suspect fired at police as he was trying to escape.

"The suspect then turned and fired at officers again, this time multiple shots. Fortunately no officers were struck," HPD spokesman Keese Smith said. "The suspect then jumped the fence. A perimeter was set up and with the assistance of a K-9 unit he was then taken into custody."

Eli Mohammad witnessed the incident that shut down the busy intersection.

"I heard a car skidding, then I heard a crash. So I just assumed it was an accident then suddenly I saw police come out of nowhere. First the cop car came in the middle of the street," Mohammad said.

No injuries were reported.
