James Roark says he rescued his neighbors' pets before escaping from his unit.

"I've lived here for 30 years," Roark said. "I'm going to miss a lot of things, so we're lucky we have friends in the area and I think they are going to put us up for the a little bit until we can figure things out."

Rosenthal Jackson and his wife live at the condominiums as well.

"Something smelled like barbecue. We was there since ten o'clock this morning and no one was barbecuing. But there was like this same smell that you smell now that's what we smelled about one-thirty, two o'clock," Jackson said.

Arson police are investigating the cause of the fire. The Red Cross is assisting displaced families.
