President Obama is set to head to Dallas on Tuesday after a sniper killed five police officers and injured 14 other people.

The ambush unfolded in downtown Dallas Thursday night at the end of a protest over two black men gunned down by police last week.

The White House says Obama will attend and speak at an interfaith memorial service for the slain officers.

The president was overseas in Poland at the time of the deadly attack, and will to depart from Rota, Spain after a short visit with troops at the naval station there, the White House says.

The mayor of Dallas extended an invitation to the president. Tuesday's memorial service will be held at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphonic Center.
