Deputy accused of setting ex-girlfriend's hair on fire

LOS ANGELES, CA -- A victim of domestic violence spoke out in an exclusive interview with Eyewitness News, and the man accused of beating her is a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy.

Maria, who doesn't want to be identified, said she feels like she's being victimized all over again. She said her ex-boyfriend, LASD Deputy Alejandro Flores, has been offered a shocking plea deal on suspicion of beating her and trying to set her on fire.

"I feel like I've been through all this and I feel like there's no justice. I feel like it's a joke," she said.

Flores faces domestic battery and assault charges in connection with an attack last summer. The couple had been together for four years, and Maria said the violence escalated from bruises on her body to a broken nose and a brutal beating.

She said Flores turned down the district attorney's plea deal offer of five years in state prison and instead opted for an offer from the judge.

"The court offered a year in county jail, which he will only be serving six months and three years of probation," she said. "I feel like he's being told, 'Oh, it's OK. You can get away with it. You can get away with almost killing somebody.'"

Maria said she feels the judge is being lenient since Flores is a deputy and the offer amounts to nothing more than a slap on the wrist.

"What would it have been if he would have killed me? Is that what would have needed to happen in order for him to have to serve more time or for this to be taken serious?" she said.
