Garrett William Nee, 29, faces charges of felony murder, intoxicated manslaughter, and intoxicated assault. He is currently being held on a $1.3 million bond.
Investigators say Nee attempted to run down a police officer and then fled the scene. At one point, the suspect allegedly ran a red light and kept going. Sgt. Baumgartner followed, but was T-boned at the intersection of FM 1485 by a white 1998 Chevy Suburban.
Baumgartner was dead when upon arrival to Memorial Hermann Hospital, in spite of attempts to revive him with CPR.
The 11-year-old, Adan Hilario, Jr., died at the scene. He and his family were on their way home from a Sunday dinner when they were involved in the crash.
Sgt. Baumgartner leaves behind a two-year-old daughter, and an older son. His wife is a 911 dispatcher.
A GoFundme page has been set up for Sgt. Baumgartner. Meantime, the 100 Club says it will help the Baumgartner family with immediate funds to take care of their needs.
It is the second time in a week that an officer in our area has been killed in a wreck while on duty. Just last Sunday, Pearland PD Officer Endy Ekpanya lost his life in an accident.
