EXCLUSIVE: Mom turns in her own young sons for stealing candy and cigarettes
KENEFICK, TX (KTRK) -- Amber Oncale made a trip to the Dollar Store in Kenefick in Liberty County on Sunday morning with her sons.
When she got to the door she was taken aback.
"I noticed one of the windows was broke," said Oncale.
Liberty County deputies say crooks broke into the store. Oncale and her family visit often and live nearby. She could sense something wasn't right.
"I just had a gut feeling," said Oncale.
After a comment from her middle son and her intuition, she wondered if her kids were the culprits. She asked her boys about the break-in as they were leaving the store.
"'Did you all have anything to do with break-in?'," she said.
Then her youngest, the 11-year-old, responded, "He shook his head, 'Yes.' I said, 'I can't hear you.' He said, 'Yes, ma'am, we did.'"
Oncale says two of her three sons broke into the Dollar Store overnight. They stole candy and cigarettes. She made the boys take it all back. Plus, she reported what they did to the Liberty County Sheriff's Department.
Oncale turned in her own sons.
"'Cause it's wrong. 'Cause he don't need to be doing stuff like this. 'Cause in the long run, it's going to end up hurting him," said Oncale.
Her actions have impressed the community and the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.
"It took a tremendous amount of courage to do what she did, turn her own sons in," said Captain Ken DeFoor with the Liberty County Sheriff's Office.
Oncale said she's worried about the path her oldest son is taking. She believes he was the one who took charge. She just prays that both of her boys learn from this.
"I love you and I want you to do better. It's in him to do better. I don't know why he's making these stupid decisions," said Oncale.
Investigators say there may be a third teen involved.
They are still investigating. No charges have been filed at this time.
