3 in custody after cache of weapons found in truck at Holland Tunnel

JERSEY CITY, NJ -- Three people were taken into custody after a cache of loaded guns and other weapons was recovered inside a truck that was stopped at the Holland Tunnel Tuesday morning.

Police say the suspects -- two males in their 50s and a woman in her 20s -- were taken into the custody following the Manhattan-bound traffic stop in Jersey City around 7:40 a.m. The van had reportedly been pulled over at the toll plaza for a cracked windshield.

Seven guns -- five pistols and two rifles -- were recovered, with one reportedly on the seat that was spotted by Port Authority police officer. Additionally, there was a large amount of ammunition and ballistic vests, along with four knives, 10 loaded clips of ammunition and a military-grade helmet.

The distinctive vehicle reportedly belongs to the owner of a gun range in Pennsylvania, and an employee at the range tells Eyewitness News that all the weapons are legal and registered, and that the owner has a carry permit.

Four months ago, his 20-year-old daughter and her 22-year-old boyfriend died of suspected heroin overdoses. Since then, he has become something of an activist, dedicating himself to rescuing others off heroin addiction. The trio told police they were headed to Queens to "rescue" a 16-year-old girl who he learned had recently overdosed and was in a bad situation.

The incident does not have a connection to any terrorism, but the Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating out of an abundance of caution.
