HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and then turning the gun on her new boyfriend made his first appearance in court today.

Darrell Mitchell could be facing additional charges.

Mitchell surrendered to police Tuesday afternoon and today he was in front of a judge.

During his first appearance, prosecutors detailed what they say happened the night Mitchell allegedly shot and killed Lakeisha Lewis. Court documents state Mitchell called one of Lewis' friends after the shooting.

According to the Probable Cause affidavit, Mitchell told Lakeisha Lewis' friend that she would have to take care of the kids now because he had killed Lewis and her new boyfriend Johnel Francis.

Lewis and Mitchell have three kids together. The couple dated for several years before police say the relationship ended earlier this year.

Detectives say Tuesday night Lewis was at home with her new boyfriend, Johnel Francis, when Mitchell came over.

Court records state when Mitchell knocked on the door, Francis answered.
