Crews rescue two teenagers after vehicle went over Oakland cliff

OAKLAND, CA -- Crews rescued two teenagers after their vehicle went over a cliff late Sunday morning in the Oakland hills.

The first report of the crash came in at 11:38 a.m. at Fish Ranch Road and Grizzly Peak Boulevard.

Firefighters hoisted a teen girl up a hill. A CHP helicopter dropped a medic at the site of the crash to lift the other victim out of the steep ravine.

Firefighters said the two teenagers were driving on the scenic East Bay road when their car plunged off the side. "The vehicle was approximately 500 feet off the roadway. The vehicle was on its side, the roof completely caved in, the air bags deployed," East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department Lt. Mark Tait said.

Tait said the victims were very shaken, but able to escape from the car on their own. "That's what I asked them, they basically just said they were driving down the hill, something they think it was a biker cut them off and they just went right through the barricade," he said.

Rescuers said the two teenagers suffered cuts, bruises and broke some bones, but were lucky to be alive.
