FIVE TO FAB: 5 Steps to Sublime Self Tanning

Before you start your sunless tanning adventure, choose the right product for your skin tone and your routine. There are sunless tanners available in several different forms including lotions, creams, gels, sprays and towelettes. Which one works best for you and your routine?

Next, decide what kind of tan you want. You can choose a gradual tanner which will develop over days, a tan that will develop over hours, or a tan that will give you instant color while it develops over a few hours.

Whether you have a fair, medium or dark tone, you will be able to find good choices in all of the categories above.

1. Exfoliate

Avoid oil based products that can cause tanner to go on skin unevenly.

Opt for exfoliating gloves. They eliminate dry shedding skin, smooth over previously applied tanner and are easily washed in between uses.

2. Protect & Prevent

a. Apply barrier cream to prevent splotchiness and over saturation. Almost any cream will work but good choices are Vaseline, cuticle oil or Nivea Hand Cream.

b. Apply these products sparingly on fingernails, toenails, ankles, knees, elbows, wrists.

3. Smooth... with a mitt or wash cloth.

Whether you are using a gel, cream or airbrush spray, be sure to smooth the product evenly over the skin with a mitt or wash cloth. This will prevent over saturation in areas.

4. Hydrate...Finish with all over hydration.

Use Neutrogena Sesame Oil or Lubiderm to smooth any remaining unevenness

5. What about hands?

a. Use barrier cream around cuticles, wrists and in between fingers.

b. Use an airbrush spray to lightly coat, hold back at least 10 inches.

c. Use Wet Ones to clean around cuticles, etc.
