CONVINGTON, KY. --It was supposed to be a different way to celebrate the opening of the Covington Farmer's Market. The goal was to walk seven goats a short distance to Goebel Park. The event was called the Running of the Goats, but organizers didn't think they would have to run after them.
Goats ended up on streets and in the bushes.
"We definitely got a goat run that's for sure," said Timothy Dodenhoff, a spectator.
Forty people signed up to be part of a human barrier around the goats, and things went well until one broke free.
"They came out and then immediately started making a break for it," said Amanda Regensburger, who signed up to help herd the goats.
"We saw them break forth and go towards the rebelling bridge and go towards the hotels here in Covington side," said Dodenhoff.
Volunteers ran after them through the freeway. Drivers were in complete shock.
"I don't think most people driving knew about the goats. So they were probably more surprised that we were," said Dodenhoff.
Several formed a plan of attack to outsmart the animals.
"I really don't want to get hit in the head," said Regensburger.
Others weren't so lucky. Owen Powell cornered the goats. His dad caught one.
"The other one bolted past the guy and I went to dive for it and as I dove I planted my foot and scraped my leg against the rock, so I got a three inch long laceration and a one inch long laceration," Powell said.
Two hours later three of the goats were found near Devou Park. Sunday morning the final two goats were captured after spending the night in the Devou woods, according to WCPO-TV.
Organizers said they were considering some changes for the event next year.
