HOUSTON (KTRK) -- If you ride the bus, traffic and accidents can really impact your route and that's why METRO is launching a mobile alert system.

METRO will give you a heads-up on any delays on interruptions, whether you are riding the bus or rail.

Riders can go to METRO's website to sign up for service alerts and to select specific bus routes.

This will allow riders to get alerts only for the buses they ride. The alert system can even help you find a detour on another bus.

"So if they find out that a particular route is delayed because of an accident or because of a mechanical issue, they can use their trip planner to find another route to their destination," Jerome Gray of Metro said.

Riders can provide a phone number for text alerts or an email address for email messages.

"All of us are so tied to our smartphones these days, it's nice to be able to look down at that smartphone and get a text message or an email alert telling you what's happening with the system," Gray said.
