Families got out with their lives, but little else when fire destroyed their apartment building in northeast Houston.

Flames erupted at the apartment building on Brewster Street at Crane in northeast Houston just after 4:30am. One family told authorities they barely got out in time, with their 8-month-old baby. No one was injured.

"Me and my baby were asleep," said father Joshua Hampton. "I heard (another family member) screaming my name so I got up. And when I got up, she was like, the house is on fire. We tried immediately to get out the front door, but the front door was stuck.

"We still couldn't hardly get out because it was, like, the smoke," said resident Janetta Davis. "We couldn't get out of there. He kicked it and it came loose. I could have been dead if my cousin hadn't been there with me."

It's believed the fire started in a vacant unit, but the cause is still under investigation. The building was destroyed. Three families have lost their homes.
