THE WOODLANDS, TX (KTRK) -- Two young children were rescued from a two-alarm fire by a stranger in The Woodlands.

As firefighters battled the flames at the Holly Creek Apartments in the 300 block of the Holly Creek Court, Ruben Wells helped pull the kids to safety.

Wells had just returned home early this morning when he saw the apartment fire and a woman screaming for help. She said her two children were still inside the home.

Woodlands apartment fire, Miya Shay reports.

Wells tried everything, from breaking in the window with a bike to kicking down the door, but the intense flames kept stopping him.

Wells said, "That's when I went to the kids' window, and I broke out kids' window and then me and the mother ... pulled them out of the window. Then we went knocking on doors trying to get them out to safety."

Wells and the mother were treated for smoke inhalation. The children -- ages 3 and 5 -- were not hurt. Fire officials credit the fact that the children were sleeping with their bedroom door closed as a significant factor in their rescue.

Fire investigators are looking into what sparked the blaze. Sixteen apartments were affected by the fire and smoke.
