HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A teenager, who police say shot and killed a man who beat up his mom, is now charged with murder.

Officers arrested Treveon Jones, 18, in connection with the shooting which occurred early Wednesday morning in the parking lot of a gas station near Collingsworth and Des Chaumes in northeast Houston.

Treveon Jones, 18, is charged with murder.

Just after 5am, according to Houston police, a woman was beaten by her common-law husband, Frederick Wallace, 40, while in his vehicle at that location. Also inside the vehicle were their three children, all under age 10. The woman called family members to come get her. Jones and another man responded. When family arrived, police say, the men removed Jones' mother and the children from Wallace's vehicle. Wallace attempted to speed away but, investigators say, Jones opened fire on him - possibly as many as 18 times - with some type of assault rifle.

"I heard a boom boom, boom, boom, boom, and I thought maybe somebody was beating down on my door," said Earl Givens, who lives nearby.

Wallace was hit at least twice in the back, according to police.

Those living nearby question why it was necessary for Jones to fire at Wallace. "Regardless of what he done to her, that still don't mean they should have took his life," said Danielle Williams.

Wallace's vehicle hit a fence across Collingsworth. Eyewitnesses say they found him unconscious behind the wheel.

Police say the shooting was captured nearly in its entirety by surveillance store video cameras.
