PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Arson investigators are working to determine the cause of a house fire that killed two young victims in Pasadena.

Firefighters say the fire broke out around 1:15am at a home on Llano Street near Almeda Genoa Road.

A 19- and 20-year-old brother and sister died in that fire.

Fire investigators say when they arrived on scene, they found 25-year-old Cody Holcomb in the front yard. He notified firefighters that his girlfriend and her teenager brother were inside the home.

Holcomb's stepmom talked exclusively to Eyewitness News. She said Holcomb and his girlfriend planned to get married and hold the wedding in the backyard of their home.

"He loved her. He was just looking so forward to their life together," said Bridget Holcomb, Cody Holcomb's stepmother.

Neighbors say Holcomb wanted to go back inside and rescue his girlfriend. It's something his stepmom was not surprised to hear.

"It wouldn't have mattered who it was. He would have tried to save somebody," said Bridget Holcomb.

Cody Holcomb was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition after suffering smoke inhalation. Both his girlfriend and her younger brother died in the fire.

His stepmother said Holcomb had big plans for the couple's future, "Worked hard to be the kind of man his dad would have wanted him to be."

Fire investigators are still looking into what started the fire. They are looking into whether there were working smoke detectors in the home.

The home appears to have suffered smoke damage, but not much fire damage.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family.
