HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man is clinging to life after a shooting in northwest Houston.

Police are investigating after a confrontation became deadly at the Crestwood Suites on Pinemont Drive near the Northwest Freeway.

Investigators say the shooting happened just before 10:30pm when a man and a couple were involved in a fight in the parking lot.

All three people are from Louisiana, and were staying at this motel. Allegedly, the man who was with the woman pulled a gun and opened fire on the man who confronted them.

Investigators say the woman's child was inside a car when the shooting happened.

The gunman was taken into custody by police. The victim is said to be clinging to life at a nearby hospital after they were shot twice, including once in the head.

Police say the woman knows the man who confronted them, but their relationship is unknown at this point.

Motel guests say they were awakened to the sound of gunshots.

"Been here about three weeks. Haven't seen anything like this yet, but it's weird," says motel guest Richard Hicks. "I've stayed here before, never seen nothing like it."
