CONROE, TX (KTRK) -- A 28-year-old man was arrested in Conroe after investigators say he fired several shots at an officer, then took part in a standoff with police that lasted several hours.

Police were first called to the Tall Timbers Apartments on 7th Street around 4am for a disturbance.

Investigators wouldn't elaborate on what kind of disturbance, but say Terrance Xavier Smith, 28, was involved. By the time officers arrived, he was gone.

Two hours later, police get another call that Smith is back at the apartments. When officers returned to the complex, they say Smith tried to run.

"The officers began to chase the suspect. During that chase, the suspect stopped turned and shot multiple rounds at the office there," said Sgt. Dorcy McGinnis, with Conroe police.

The officer was not hit and did not return fire.

Investigators say Smith then ran into his girlfriend's empty apartment and refused to come out for hours.

"They did let me go to the door to try and talk him out because I told them I probably could, but he would not come out," said Christene Milo, Smith's grandmother.

Milo's coaxing did not work. Eventually, police gassed the apartment and SWAT went in.

"I'm not doing good now, I'm not doing good. My nerves are really raw," Milo said, after watching police take her grandson away in handcuffs.

Smith will likely be charged with aggravated assault using a deadly weapon, among other things.
