Wrong-way driver dies as firefighters attempt to rescue him in Huntsville

Wrong-way driver killed in Walker County
A deadly crash near Walker County all started when someone entered the highway on the wrong side.

WALKER COUNTY, TX (KTRK) -- A wrong-way driver was killed after hitting several cars before crashing with an SUV in a head-on collision.

The Walker County Sheriff's Office says it happened just before 10pm on I-45, between New Waverly and Huntsville State Park.

Deputies say the driver of a silver Lincoln was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when he struck several cars near Park Road 40.

The New Waverly Fire Department found the wrong-way driver trapped inside his Lincoln and in critical condition. Firefighter tried to free the man, but he died at the scene.

Emergency workers found a Jeep with heavy damage and two injuries. The driver of another vehicle involved did not require medical attention.

Three vehicles were directly involved in the accident. A fourth vehicle had minor damage after its driver struck several pieces of debris.
