Houston police fired tear gas into a vehicle where man was barricaded inside.

A SWAT standoff has just ended in the middle of State Highway 249 in northwest Houston.

Houston police were communicating with a man barricaded inside his vehicle via bullhorn before they fired tear gas inside his vehicle.

Cody David Chavell, 28, has been hospitalized after police say he cut himself on his neck at some point during the standoff.

abc13's Courtney Fischer described the dramatic scene on Twitter:

It all began around 3:45am when police began pursuing a suspect through several neighborhoods off of the Northwest Freeway.

At one point, police lost the suspect before finding him again.

Police say they believe he ran out of gas on SH 249 near TC Jester Boulevard, and that is when he barricaded himself inside his SUV and refused to come out.

The standoff has prompted a closure of SH249 just east of TC Jester Boulevard to McKinley Street in both directions. You will want to seek alternate routes to get around the closure.
