HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Cassie Anderson was shot in her legs after trying to help a carjacking victim. Since we first shared her story, she in now able to afford surgery to get a bullet still lodged in her thigh. She's hoping after surgery she will be able to get through yet another hurdle -- walking.

"It melts my heart that he is there by my side," said Anderson about her fianc.

They're a young couple in love just like any other. Cassie Anderson plays the guitar and Davon Smith vapes for fun.

"I went to a competition and won," he said.

Eyewitness News first introduced you to Cassie the weekend before New Year's. She was shot in both legs while trying to help a carjacking victim. It happened outside her waitressing job on the city's west side.

"I was shocked no one seen where he was or went after him and I regretted not being there," said Smith.

It has been a roller coaster of emotions for the young couple who was planning to get married this year.

"My main priority is being by her side," said Smith.

Thanks to some of Eyewitness News viewers, the couple was able to get close to $10,000 for surgery on her Go Fund Me account.

"Thank you times infinity," said Anderson.

While the first bullet only left a hole in her right thigh, the second bullet is still stuck in her left thigh.

"There's times when you feel everything will be OK and then times when it gets hard," said Smith.

She's scheduled to get surgery Sunday. They're hoping everything goes as planned.

"I've seen how strong she is through a lot of this it's just made me fall in love with her a little bit more," said Smith.

Even if for some reason she can't get back on her feet, Cassie will still be Mrs. Smith one way or another.

"(I'll be) wheeling down the aisle," she said jokingly.
