KATY, TX (KTRK) -- Thieves stole mail from two Katy-area post office bins Tuesday morning, according to a postal inspector.

A note from the postal inspector is taped onto a bin located on Fourth Street in Historic Katy. The note warns residents who use that outdoor bin to monitor their banking accounts closely.

"I think that's bad because everybody sends important things during the holidays," Andrew Pena said.

The postal inspector thinks the same mail thieves stole from another mail bin that same morning, located on Baker Road. The metal lock is broken on that mailbox, and the mail slot is covered with cardboard and tape.

Many customers are walking inside the post offices to mail their letters for safety reasons now.

"I'd rather take it inside so it goes directly to the truck," Tyrone Baines said. "You leave it outside, you've got the potential that something like that may happen, you know, someone sticking their hand in, reach down there and pick it up."

Investigators are reviewing security video from the Baker Road location to try to identify the thieves. If you have any information that could help, call 877-876-2455.
