Giving newborns in need a safe place to sleep
Texas Children's Hospital is making sure parents of newborns have a safe place for their little ones to sleep.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's a lot to think about when bringing home a newborn. From clothes, understanding the baby's dietary needs, even setting up the nursery. Unfortunately, not every family has the financial means to fully furnish the home with everything that's needed. But one program at Texas Children's Hospital recognizes that.

New mom, Keyandra Augustine-Ward tells us, "I'm not working anymore. I have to take care of the baby. We're trying to save."

Keyandra's baby girl was born premature in June, and had overcome some medical obstacles along the way. She's coming home soon, which means mom and dad have to make sure everything is ready for her, including a place to sleep. However, money is tight and every dollar counts.

"I was online looking for a crib and saw Texas Children's had a program here," Keyandra says.

Through Texas Children's "No Crib For A Bed" program, Keyandra and her husband Jamal qualify to receive a pack-n-play at no cost.

James Denham is the chaplain at Texas Children's and is in charge of the program.

"We found there were a lot of families sleeping with babies in bed together and we thought there's a need we can address," according to Denham. "Most of the problems were that they couldn't afford a pack-n-play or a crib. And so we wanted to collect pack-n-plays, especially around the holiday season."

This is the second year for the program. Roughly 50 pack-n-plays have gone to a family in need over the past year. On top of a safe place to sleep, parents also go home with vital information.

Denham told us, "We provide a pack-n-play and a baby blanket and information about safe sleeping. And that's very important for us. The information piece is very critical."

The blankets and pack-n-plays are donated by generous individuals throughout the year. If you're looking to donate, contact the spiritual care department at the hospital. They're willing to receive any donations of pack-n-plays or baby blankets. It's a gift Keyandra and Jamel appreciate immensely.

Keyandra tells us, "It's a blessing to have someone provide a bed for your baby to sleep in at night."
