Ten kids rescued from fire
When fire burned at a northeast Houston home, Brian Robertson jumped into action

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Ten children were injured in an early morning house fire in northeast Houston, but they're all expected to be OK.

The Houston Fire Department was called to a fire in the 6800 block of Bacher at about 5:30am.

The children, all siblings and cousins, woke up screaming for help before their family could get them out of their northeast side house.

"I could hear my other kids yelling, 'Daddy, daddy, come get us.' I ran around the other side of the house and busted all them windows out," Brian Robertson recalled.

Mom and dad woke up with their bed sheets on fire and 10 children screaming for help. The couple had seconds to get the kids out of the burning home.

Mother Tomica Robertson said, "I didn't feel nothing. It was like y'all just go, go and they ran."

The kids range in age from four to 16 years old. Six of them are this couple's biological children, but the other four were their kids, too - nieces, nephews, godchildren who lived with them. All of them - even the youngest - worked together to get out safely.

"My 11-year-old was like, 'Daddy, Destiny and Demarion are passed out.' I told her you're going to have to give me their arm so I can pull them out the window, you have to. I need you to do that right now."

The kids were rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital with smoke inhalation and minor burns. The home is probably a total loss, but on this Memorial Day, this family has everything they need - each other.

"My God is good, that's all I can say."

The fire was brought under control by 6am. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Houston Arson Bureau.
