HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- In the minutes following the mass shooting outside the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino, the chaos and fear quickly spread to the airport.

McCarran International Airport is located adjacent to the Las Vegas strip.

Flights were halted and the airport was locked down for some time during the chaos of the shooting.

One of the first flights out of Las Vegas arrived at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport just before 5 a.m.

Passengers on that flight were in the airport, on their way to the airport and on the strip when the shooting started.

They also were locked down inside while police worked to secure the area around the airport.

Witnesses described the situation as terrifying, saying it was chaotic with sirens going off in the airport.

Many saw people running on the strip.

One man said he heard the gunshots and, like many witnesses, assumed they were fireworks until he saw people running.

Several other flights from Las Vegas are due to arrive at Bush and Hobby Airport throughout the day.
