HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The rain just keeps coming. More is on the way Wednesday and for the rest of the week and a bigger mess could be brewing at any moment as hurricane season nears.
If you did not get any damage from the storms over the last few days, consider yourself lucky. But the really big storm season is around the corner and now is the time to get ready.
Dramatic images of storm water over the last few days pale in comparison with the damage Mike Wodecki experienced.
"I had 47 inches of water," he said.
Wodecki's life changed for ever after Hurricane Ike.
"I don't save stuff anymore. Everybody lost so much it's just hard to. I used to be kind of a pack rat, but not anymore," he said.
The rain we've seen recently will not cause major damage, but if it does, most of it will be covered under homeowners insurance, not flood insurance.
"With heavy rain, sometimes it can seep through the roof line, get into the attic, get through the ceiling, that would be handled under your normal homeowners insurance policy," Houston insurance agent Theo Franklin said.
Franklin says hail damage also is filed under homeowners insurance. When it comes to the devastation of a hurricane, he says flood insurance is the way to protect your home and hurricane season is just days away.
"It's generally very inexpensive for what you get for it if a flood does occur," Franklin said.
Franklin says some Ike victims who had to rely on FEMA are still not back to where they were before the storm, another reason it pays to have flood insurance.
"You turn in the claim and as long as it meets the criteria of a flood, you going to get paid for the amount of damage up to the amount of coverage you have," Franklin said.
And don't forget, there is a 30-day waiting period on flood insurance so get it now, before a storm forms.
