Unique lab allows artists to expand their vision
Business offers equipment that can help someone creative generate unique items

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- On Houston's East End, TX/RX Labs promises to be the "the garage of the 21st century." The place, known as a Makerspace or Hackerspace, is part of an emerging trend in the Bayou City.

The facilities offer members the chance to create anything they want with some impressive equipment. At TX/RX Labs, there's everything from welding to sewing classes. For business systems analyst Summer Reeves, she found her passion by making leather masks with a laser printer.

"I never heard of a place where they had everything," said Reeves. "I fell into doing leather mask masking simply because I like to go to the Renaissance Festival. This year, they were doing a masquerade ball."

Reeves came across TX/RX Labs from a Reddit post. Fast forward to this fall, she started selling some of her creations on the Internet.

"I went to their website. They had a bunch of classes on just about everything," said Reeves.

TX/RX Labs President Roland von Kurnatowski told Eyewitness News they have about 230 members.

"What we're doing is trying to become the garage of the 21st century," said von Kurnatowski. "Houston for some reason does not have a lot of that. That's really silly because we're a high tech town anyways in terms of banking and oil. That hasn't really percolated down to the individual artist."

TX/RX Labs host an open house every Friday from 7PM to 10PM.
