HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Houston Museum of African American Culture is opening a landmark exhibit Saturday.

The Kinsey Collection is one of the most important collection of African American art and historic artifacts every assembled. Sponsored nationally by Wells Fargo, it features documents dating from the 1500s to the Civil War, Reconstruction, Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Movement.

Bernard and Shirley Kinsey began collecting more than 30 years ago, in an effort to learn more about their own family and cultural history. They were especially concerned that their son, Khalil, have a strong knowledge and understanding about his own rich background.

The collection has been seen by more than 3 million people in 18 cities. They also have important pieces at the Smithsonian and Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida.
