Man who was left to die works toward recovery
At 23 years old, League City resident Greg Cortez is learning how to do basic things all over again

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- At 23 years old, League City resident Greg Cortez is learning how to do basic things all over again.

At Memorial Hermann TIRR Friday, he demonstrated how making a sandwich for lunch was a task.

Cortez was shot in his neck last year and paralyzed from the injury. His car broke down in the Greenspoint area in January 2013. Two men offered to help him. Instead, he says, they robbed him at gunpoint and left him to die.

"I remember the feeling of no one is gonna help me. Did you think you were gonna die? oh, yes. I was very, very scared," Cortez said.

Cortez has since been learning how to walk again, dress himself and hopes to go back to work one day.

"God was watching me that night. I prayed to God to give me a second chance and he did and I'm taking advantage of it now," he said.

He says he's forgiven the men who did this to him, but he will never forget.

"I'm just thankful that I am alive," Cortez said.

Police have never found the suspects.
