UH students putting food that would be wasted to good use

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A class assignment turned into something much bigger for honors students at the University of Houston.

A group of students are collecting un-served food from the cafeteria and delivering the food to families in need. The program is called Campus Kitchen.

Sophomore Brinda Penmetsa started the program at UH. She and her team have delivered nearly one ton of food to families living in New Hope Housing.

"A lot of us growing up have been privileged enough to have a lot of food," Penmetsa said, "But we want to show Houston that UH cares and that students care."

New Hope Housing President and CEO Joy Horak-Brown is grateful for the program.

"These are individuals whose food budget is meager," Horak-Brown said, "And so the types of fresh food that the students bring are a marvelous benefit."

Penmetsa encourages students at other colleges to look into starting their own campus kitchen.
