Incredible love story with two Houston doctors

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A pair of highly specialized surgeons support each other in their careers and in their marriage.

"I'm an interventional cardiologist," Dr. Shehzad Sami said.

His wife, Mirwat, is an Ocularplastic surgeon. They met in medical school in Pakistan years ago. To show his love, Shehzad gave Mirwat a neurology book.

"And I tried to teach her. Little did she know, I had no idea what I was doing! I tried to teach her all the pathways, all the neurons and stuff," Shehzad said.

His tactic worked.

"It did," Mirwat said, "I was such a nerd back then. I thought, 'Oh my God, this guy actually cares about what I care about," Mirwat said.

The two were married in 2002 and moved to Houston. Mirwat sees patients in Bellaire, and Shehzad works long hours in Baytown. They also have three children younger than 10.

"We trust each other just immensely, and I think that I couldn't find a bigger advocate than him for myself," Mirwat said, "And just over the years, that love, that support, it's just gotten better, it's expanded and we make a really good team."

Shehzad admires Mirwat's passion for her career.

"I've seen her go over the steps of the surgical procedures nights before or weeks before," Shehzad said, "And that is very commendable."

Scheduling their lives can be difficult, but they always make time to check the pulse of their relationship.

"We have time with our kids, but we also carve out a little bit of time just for ourselves," Mirwat said, "So we go on date nights and movie nights, so that's really something we cherish."

This Valentine's Day, the Samis are in good shape.
