Festivals, musicals, food competitions and more highlight the holiday weekend

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Carnival Houston is a four day event celebrating Houston's cultural diversity. This high-energy event features the Caribbean, Central, and South American backgrounds. Activities include a Masquerade Bash, a Houston Caribbean Queen Pageant, a Neon Party, and the Street Parade and Festival in front of the Toyota Center. The parade is free.

The Pearland VFW Post 7109 Memorial Day Celebration and BBQ Cook-off takes place Saturday. Teams from all over Southeast Texas will compete for the title of best BBQ starting at 10am. BBQ plates range from $10-15 and proceeds support the VA Medical Center volunteer services, Wounded Warriors Project, and VFW District Scholarship Fund. Monday, there will be a Memorial Day Ceremony and Celebration at the Post starting at 11am.

Head to historic Downtown Tomball on Saturday from noon to 5pm for the Memorial Day Weekend Chili Challenge. There, teams from all over Texas, local businesses, and juniors will compete for the best chili. Proceeds go to help local families at Christmas time. The event and parking are free.

If you love musicals and want a fun, indoor event, check out Disney's Newsies at The Hobby Center. Newsies is based on a true story from 1899 about the young generation taking a stand for what they believe. These news boys tell the story through the Tony-award winning score and choreography that promises to dazzle. Newsies runs through May 24th at The Hobby Center.

Zumba lovers, get ready to sweat to the best of Latin music. Zumba creator Beto Perez will be leading a two-hour master class at Zumba Fest Texas this Saturday at NRG Center. Some of the best worldwide known dancers will also be there. This fitness concert costs $67. Doors open at noon, and the master class is at 5pm.
