HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Acres Homes may not be a community where the houses look like palaces but it is most certainly is a community where the families have pride. And back to school season brings with it a burden to impress your peers.

Let 11-year-old Asia Walker explain.

"When you don't look good, they kind of think that you don't have anything and that means you didn't get your hair done for school and so they bully you," she said.

Crystal Lofton planned the service giveaway as part of her non-profit, 'No Boys Allowed.' Her year-round program, with its dance teams and workshops, aims to boost girls' self-esteem.

"We think starting with the outside, it lets us build a relationship with them to build self-esteem and self-confidence and self-respect," Lofton said.

Michelle Harris heard about the free service on Facebook. She usually styles her two daughters hair herself so this is their first visit to a beauty salon.

"I was overly excited because I am one of the parents who could not afford to bring my kids to a beauty salon to get their hair fixed," Harris said.

There were nine stylists there Friday, packing the Hair God's Barber and Beauty spa, which is donating the space. Krystal Doomas is donating her time.

"You'd be surprised how many girls don't get a chance to feel pretty and it makes your attitude different you can speak better you can learn because you're not worried about, 'Oh, is my hair OK.'" Doomas said.

No worries here, these girls can focus on getting As.

On Saturday, they are doing free styling again. It's first come, first served. The address is 803 West Little York.
