Golden Nugget casino open for business
The newest casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana, may have a familiar feel for Texas fans

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KTRK) -- With the cutting of a ribbon on Monday, Houstonian Tilman Fertitta opened up the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Lake Charles.

The new $700 million, 1.3 million-square-foot resort is the fifth Golden Nugget property and the closest to Texas.

"Golden Nugget Lake Charles is like no other gaming resort offering a first-class, Las Vegas-style atmosphere right here in the South," said Fertitta. "We know our strong Texas and Louisiana customer base will enjoy having these unbeatable, luxury amenities closer to home."

Inside, there are 740 luxury hotel rooms and suites, an 18-hole championship golf course, 30,000 square feet of meeting space, pool, private beachfront and marina and Landry's restaurants.

And, of course, there's the casino featuring 70 table games, a poker room and 1,600 slot machines.

A popular spot for Texas gamblers and the closest in proximity, Lake Charles is located just a couple of hours away from Houston. According to Fertitta, 65 percent of gambling revenue in Lake Charles comes from Houston, San Antonio and Austin.
