Filmmaker profiles well-known artist mother in film festival submission

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Houston Cinema Arts Festival kicked off this weekend. The seven-day event is now in its eighth year. "Call Her Applebroog" is among the many movies that will be screened.

Filmmaker Beth B spoke with Eyewitness News this afternoon, saying her work is personal -- the subject is her own mother. The film centers on famed New York artist Ida Applebroog.

"It was one of the most touching films I've ever made. It was also the most difficult," said Applebroog. "What's wonderful about my mother's story is that she did have a breakdown when I was 14 years old. It wasn't something that just snap happened. It was something that grew. She became in her mind, she knew she needed to do something other than being a mother and a wife."

Beth B said her mother used art to reconstruct her identity.
