NEW YORK -- If you walked past four-time Grammy winner Erykah Badu singing on the street, would you know what a deal you were getting?

The singer-songwriter, armed with her hat and iPhone, took to the sidewalks of New York on Friday, October 10 for a social experiment.

"I just kind of always wanted to see what it would be like to, you know, sing for money on the streets," she said. "So I'm trying to find a good place to stop and do it."

Badu joked with passersby and posed for photos before starting her unusual 'concert.'

"Maybe I should take off my hat, so that people won't know who I am," she said.

Most unfazed New Yorkers simply moved on past, but after less than 10 minutes of singing, Badu netted a grand total of $3.60 for her 'anonymous' performance.
