There may be difficulty when your school-age kid returns to school, especially after a disaster like Harvey.
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Your school-age kids may find it difficult to get back into a routine, especially after a weather disaster kept them from classes.
Experts are emphasizing the need for normalcy and a focus away from the stressful nature of the disaster's effects.
The American School Counselor Association gave these tips to parents and guardians when it comes to after-disaster school routines:
- Keep routines as normal as possible: Children will gain comfort from the predictability of a routine
- Limit their exposure to television and news stories relating to the disaster
- Honesty is key: Open them to as much info as they are able to understand
- Be open to listen to your child's fears and concerns in the wake of the disaster
- Consider yourself: It's just as important to see how you react to crisis and stress
- Have your child rebuild their attachments and relationships, including with teachers and classmates
