The Chew's Carla Hall surprises volunteers at Houston Food Bank
The Chew's Carla Hall surprised volunteers and Houston chef at Food Bank.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Food Bank had some extra help in preparing meals for the needy Monday morning, but this was no ordinary volunteer.

Celebrity chef and ABC's "The Chew" co-host Carla Hall made a surprise visit at the food bank.

The show is shooting a special segment highlighting its Kids Cafe Program.

She also surprised Houston private chef and "The Chew" super fan Rhonda Russell.

With the help of Food Bank volunteers, Hall demonstrated how to make crunchy sesame noodle chicken salad.

"What they're trying to do here is really getting kids used to eating vegetables and for older people. Because that's the difference between a healthy body and an unhealthy body. So they are really trying to make sure people are staying healthy with fresh produce," Hall said.

"The Chew" donated $7,000 to the Houston Food Bank in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

Hall and her co-hosts have pledged to match that donation, bringing the total to $35,000.
