Mortgage assistance
The City of Houston Housing and Development department is stepping up to help Harvey victims struggling to pay their mortgage.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- If you were affected by Harvey and struggling to pay your mortgage, the City of Houston Housing and Community Development department is offering help.

The department will help victims discuss options with their mortgage company, apply for assistance and meet debt counselors that can help with finances.

"There will be some sort of transition, obviously, from the forbearance period into your mortgage payment, and you want to talk to your bank to see what that will look like, so you reduce the payment shock," said Erik Selk.

There will be debt management counselors on site to guide you, along with housing counselors, insurance companies and Houston-area partners at the Chinese Community Center in Southwest Houston.

Homeowners who attend the event should bring their photo ID, mortgage information, documentation of all income and all property insurance documents.

The event will be held at the Chinese Community Center from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
