The former 18-story Houston Club Building was imploded over the weekend

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Part of Houston's skyline is forever changed after Sunday morning's implosion of the old Houston Club.

The demolition made way for blue skyline and a pile of rubble where the historic building stood for decades in downtown Houston.

Around 520 pounds of explosives did in the 18-story building. The demolition of the building at the corner of Rusk is making way for a new chapter.

A small crowd of people showed up to see it in person, one of them saying their love of Houston -- past and future -- is what inspired them to wake up early on a Sunday.

"It's always exciting," said Alex Avila del Angele. "You always get a thrill; a rush; your heart races and then you almost get a little teary-eyed knowing that it's gone."

The demolition of the building is making way for a new 34-story structure currently called Capitol Tower. It's in the planning stage. Construction won't begin until developers find a tenant for a big portion of the space.
