Today marks 178th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto

HOUSTON

It was on this day in 1836 when General Sam Houston and the Texas army defeated the Mexican army. Mexican General Santa Anna was captured. In exchange for his freedom, he recognized Texas's independence.

A ceremony commemorating the battle is being held at the San Jacinto Monument. It begins this morning at 10:30am. The ceremony is open to the public and it is free.

The largest battle re-enactment in the state is the centerpiece of the admission-free San Jacinto Day Festival held from 10am to 6pm, Saturday, April 26 on the grounds surrounding the San Jacinto Monument.
