Young artists put on unique display for neighborhood

HOUSTON

The talented tiny artists have been studying the 20th century art form that plays on the imagination, combining unreal images in rather unique ways.

"This is one of our favorite days at Poe. The kids absolutely love this," said Principal Jeff Amerson. "They learn about art and then they actually get to come out and do the art and then the art stays up, as long as it doesn't rain, for the neighborhood to see."

Poe Elementary School is an HISD fine arts magnet school that specializes in the arts. "All Art Day" has been going on for the past 13 years and this year, with the help of some local visual artists, the students will again display their sidewalk masterpieces for the neighborhood to enjoy.

"One of our philosophies here at Poe is that we learn by doing and we can practice for test, but we can also do real authentic learning. This is part of our authentic learning. Children get to come out and actually cement what they are learning by doing it themselves," said Amerson.
